Intent v. Impact

What do we understand about intent?

What do we understand about impact?

The truth is we can never know what is in a person's heart or head, but we do know the impact a person's actions and words have on those around them. As culturally responsive, anti-bias practitioners, we want more than good intentions. We want our impact and intent to match.

Success in achieving goals and working with a diversity of people increases when you can more deeply understand culturally-learned differences, recognize commonalities between yourself and others, and act on increased insight in ways that facilitate collaboration and achieving goals together with diverse individuals and groups.

Deeper cultural competency development includes increasing one's cultural self- and other-awareness. Working with a coach can increase these insights.

Consider your own identity using the graphic to the right. Think about primary & secondary identity and organizational & cultural identity. All rings intersect to create foundations of your cultural self. How often are your values and beliefs reflected in the workplace or school culture? How do you adjust when your values are not reflected?

Culture extends beyond race, ethnicity, and nation of origin. Culture is the compilation of category membership (e.g., gender identity, sexual orientation, spiritual & faith practices, etc.) as well as lived experiences (where you live, with whom you live, educational trajectory, etc.). Organizational and cultural identity (e.g., industry, tenure, power/authority views, time, collaboration/competition, structured/flexible, individual/team, etc.) are/were created by a group of people over time, historically by those who hold power. Culture is above the surface (e.g., art, music, food), and culture is below the surface (e.g., relationships, physical space, hierarchy).

Cultural competency is the ability to consider individual values & beliefs--below the surface--are culturally grounded and to shift perspectives & adapt behavior to cultural differences & commonality across primary, secondary, organizational, and cultural identity.

Cultural competency coaching with Wicht Consulting Inc leverages the Intercultural Development Inventory tool and crosswalks individual profile results with a set of anti-bias tenets for a personalized approach to ongoing intercultural development.
